GMC Survey 2024 – Acting on the results in the Thames Valley Deanery

We would like to thank doctors in training and educators for your engagement with the GMC survey 2024 which ran between March and May this year.  The survey provides an essential source of data for those involved in education and training to assess the quality of training.

We know that it is not always clear to doctors in training what happens with the results, and with the August rotation, doctors may have moved on from the placement area before seeing any changes. Therefore, we would like to share a summary of how the results are managed following publication on 25 July.  Results can be explored on the GMC’s online reporting tool on their website.

The survey was completed by 1,529 doctors in training across the TV region, achieving a 67% response rate.  This compares to 76% nationally. Results are being reviewed extensively by those involved in education & training, inc. Heads of Schools/TPDs, DMEs, dept. leads.
Results have been compiled into various reports and shared widely
Results were reviewed and analysed in depth by NHSE education quality teams. Negative outliers in 80 placement areas across TV were reviewed, and answers to questions considered to identify what has caused the outlier.Trusts and Schools were asked to respond to the data, identifying any necessary action. Following analysis of the outliers, 38 placement areas are being explored further by Trusts/Schools and will return summaries of their initial actions and investigations in October.
Where further assurance is required, the Education Quality Committee will review the responses to determine what further action is required. This may include:
Placement areas/learning environments added to the Thames Valley risk register for ongoing monitoring.
A quality intervention (review) from the quality framework.
Thereafter, NTS data and actions are reviewed and discussed:
with each Head of School at the annual quality reviews meetings in Autumn 2024.
with each DME at the annual quality review meetings in Spring 2025.
regularly at the NHSE Education Quality Committee.
with the GMC’s education quality assurance team.

A comprehensive report will be produced later in the year detailing areas of good practice and what investigations and actions have been taken in response to the results; this will be shared widely and available on this webpage. Please also read the ‘You said, we did’ reports describing the actions taken to address quality of education and training issues from previous surveys.

Thank you again for your engagement with the survey.  We hope we have assured you that the data is acted upon and encourage you to continue providing feedback on your education and training through the survey.
